Special Awards

The DaVincI Award for Outstanding Creativity.
This award is given for having a unique approach to a solution, for risk taking, and/or for outstanding creativity (not skill or talent).

Strafford School
130-09174
Obstacles, Of Course!
Middle

This team demonstrated exceptional creativity in their design, their integration of the entire theme, the way their story line was conveyed by their music, their costumes, and the complete integration of their vehicle into the story. Their attention to detail went way above and beyond what was expected for the challenge, as did the complexity of their hand-made costumes and three dimensional model of their course as their map.

Phillips Exeter Academy
130-75207
Chorific
Secondary

This team took an extremely imaginative approach to their Chorific challenge. While it would have been easier to have taken a safer approach, this team truly thought out-of-the-box, selecting a theme that faced the challenge of buying and returning dreams. The performance included creative sound themes, including a complicated multi-step simulation of a cash register, and a musical experience based on a PVC pipe duck-taped with an adapted drinking straw. You could close your eyes and sense you were hearing actual notes—like in a dream.

Pinkerton Academy

DI’ve Got a Secret!
Secondary

Unique and original story idea, costumes and interpretation of the challenge. The optical illusions and how each character interpreted the illusions presented were both unusual and creative. Excellent costumes and scenery! Their entire presentation was extensively integrated.

Rundlett Middle School
130-26931
DI’ve Got a Secret!
Middle

This team showed exceptional creativity in recreating their set in the prep area after it was accidentally damaged immediately before their performance. Their performance had an exceptionally creative story line and humor, which repeatedly surprised and amused the appraisers and audience with their plot turns.

The Renaissance Award for outstanding Design, Engineering, Execution, Performance

This award is given for outstanding skill in the areas of engineering, design, or performance.

Grantham Village School
130-18557
Chorific
Middle

Although this team had only three members, their extraordinary design skills, judicious use of resources, and exceptional persistence enabled them to exceed expectations for the quality and number of items constructed!

Bow Elementary

Hit or Myth
Elementary

This team demonstrated extraordinary effort in their preparation and flawless execution of the solution to this problem through the well-researched, engaging, and consistent use of the Shakespearean language, enlightening the appraisers about many lively and colorful phrases of the period. In addition, this team’s outstanding design of their marionettes, using wire and hand-sewn clothing, used a technique that prevented the strings from tangling. The marionettes were used effectively to enrich the story. This team was engaging and entertaining from beginning to end.

Concord High School
130-63681
Hit or Myth
Secondary

This team combined scenes from ancient China and today to explain lead poisoning. The story was relevant and elegantly told. The artistry was stunning ; a papier mache replica of a Chinese Terra Cotta soldier (stunning exterior: recycled pop bottles for the internal frame); hand-made screens with authentic Chinese characters wood-burned into the wood, and a lively piano accompaniment to set the multiple scenes. The details and craftsmanship throughout showed extraordinary skills. The prep area appraisers noted that you could tell instantly that this team was committed and dedicated to the task in every way.

Thornton central School

DI’ve Got a Secret!
Elementary

This team is awarded a Renaissance Award for their continual problem solving, refined process to solve challenges, team work, original set design, prop construction, costume research and design, and use and integration of Inuit language into the story. This team’s props were very focused and mature for their age.
